You can catch Claire performing at the Edge bar in San Francisco on Thursday nights as one of the regular hosts of the longest running drag show in the Castro, The Monster Show.
About Kegel Kater:
I was born in Phoenix, Arizona. I did not identify with a lot of what was expected of girls in the culture that surrounded me. I felt like an outsider. I thought there was something very wrong with me.
When I first learned about drag, I heard about drag queens—and was a fan, but my initial understanding was that drag was something that only cis men could do. After moving to the Bay Area, I learned about drag kings and people of all different gender identities doing drag.
Learning this made drag the most exciting thing for me, because it showed how much of gender was a performance, and that there was absolutely nothing wrong with me. I learned that with some makeup, I could alter or dodge other peoples’ perceptions and expectations of me. It was very liberating.
Now I am grateful to be immersed in a broad spectrum of drag, performed as or by any gender. The community/ies around drag are some of the most inspiring, loving and inclusive groups I have ever seen.
When I perform, I use drag to exercise all forms of gender demons, sometimes being an attractive drag king, or queen; a pig or a horse; an idol or a creep.
Vanilla Meringue is the bubbly and bodacious alter-ego of make-up artist, Joel King. Vanilla can be spotted around the Bay Area in stage shows and in nightclubs, while Joel is working with celebrity clients and is an educator with Kryolan Professional Make-up.
